Winter Wonderland
Join us on this 5-day guided 4×4 self-driven expedition where you get to experience remoteness in combination with must-see sights. This tour is a combination of the Golden Circle and the South Coast of Iceland. The tour has a great balance between must-see sights and remoteness. Escape the ordinary and join us on this adventure of a lifetime. What makes our expeditions special is the fact that we use the back roads as much as possible. Giving us a change to explore many hidden areas in peace.
Day 1
Our tour starts when we depart from Reykjavík city, on this 5-day tour we´ll explore many areas that are less travelled in a combination with must see sites. Our first stop is Þingvellir National Park, the area is known for unbelievable beauty and history. It´s where the Vikings established the parliament in the year 930 and where a rift valley is being created by the drift of two tectonic plates, the North American and the Eurasian plates. From there we drive into the interior, the route selection depends on conditions at the time. The area we explore is North of Þingvellir and South of Langjökull glacier.
Next stop is the geothermal area at Geysir where we have an opportunity to explore hot-springs and see one called Strokkur erupt water up to 20-30 meters into the air. Our final stop of the day is Gullfoss waterfall and from there we´ll drive to our accommodation for the night in South Iceland.
Day 2
After breakfast we drive towards the South coast of Iceland, the first stop is at Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi waterfalls. After our stop we head towards an area where we go off the beaten path. We drive to Skógasandur following old trails. We visit the beach before we return to the main road to drive to the village Vík. From Vík we continue East and visit areas found off the beaten path before we arrive at our accommodation in South Iceland.
Day 3
On this day we drive into the domain of Vatnajökull glacier, Europe´s largest glacier. Our first stop is the beautiful canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur. We hike a long side the 100 m high canyon for a better look. We then drive further East to get closer to Vatnajökull glacier, where we go on an ice cave tour with local experts (available from September – April). If we are travelling outside the ice cave season, we go for a glacier hike instead. Before we head back to our accommodation, we visit the unique glacier lagoon and the diamond beach.
Day 4
After breakfast we drive West towards Mýrdalsjökull glacier and back to Vík. The route selection is based on conditions on the day, but we will be driving roads and trails less traveled. Driving by the magnificent Hafursey inselberg and Kötlujökull outlet glacier before we arrive in Vík. We then visit Reynisfjara black sand beach and Skógafoss waterfall. Arriving at our accommodation in the late afternoon.
Day 5
On this last day of the tour we drive to Reykjanes peninsula, it´s the South-West tip of Iceland. We visit the geothermal area at Seltún, Krísuvíkurbjarg cliff, the new lava field Fagradalshraun and Eldvörp craters. Before we leave this volcanic area we enjoy a relaxing experience at the Blue Lagoon. Arriving in Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
