Water and Black Sand
Join us on this 3-day guided self-driven expedition where you get to experience remoteness in combination with must-see sights. This tour is a combination of the Golden Circle and the South Coast of Iceland. We aim to be at the sights either before or after the crowds for the best possible experience. What makes our expeditions special is the fact that we use the back roads as much as possible. Giving us a chance to explore many hidden areas in peace.
Tour highlights are Þingvellir National Park, Geysir hot-spring area, Gullfoss waterfall, Skógafoss waterfall, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Reynisfjara black sand beach, Hafursey inselberg and less travelled roads and trails.
Day 1
Our tour starts when we depart from Reykjavík city, on this 3-day tour we´ll explore many areas that are less travelled in a combination with must see sites. Our first stop is Þingvellir National Park, the area is known for unbelievable beauty and history. It´s where the Vikings established the parliament in the year 930 and where a rift valley is being created by the drift of two tectonic plates, the North American and the Eurasian plates. From there we drive into the interior, the route selection depends on conditions on day. The area we explore is North of Þingvellir and South of Langjökull glacier.
Next stop is the geothermal area at Geysir where we have an opportunity to explore hot-springs and see one called Strokkur erupt water up to 20-30 meters into the air. Our final stop of the day is Gullfoss waterfall and from there we´ll drive to our accommodation for the night in South Iceland.
Day 2
After breakfast we drive further East to Reynisfjara black sand beach and the village Vík. Vík is in the most Southern part of Iceland and lies between the glacier Mýrdalsjökull and the North Atlantic Ocean. We continue further East to an area called Mýrdalssandur where we´ll spend the day exploring the area East of the glacier. In the afternoon we arrive at our accommodation for the night.
Day 3
Today we return to Reykjavík, route selection can be different depending on conditions on the day. During summer and fall we save the best for last when it comes to areas to visit. We will drive through a remote part of the highlands on our way back. Driving a route North of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, we will explore beautiful areas, such as, Hólmsárfossar waterfall, Mælifell mountain and many more. We estimate to be back to Reykjavík in the later afternoon.
If we are travelling in winter or spring, we drive South of Mýrdalsjökull glacier and visit places like Hjörleifshöfði inselberg and the black sand beach, Seljalandsfoss waterfall and other beautiful sights. We estimate to be back to Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
